How to Prepare for a Remote Dental Consultation Before You Fly

What photos, records, questions and expectations make a remote dental consultation useful without pretending it replaces an in-person exam.

A good remote consultation should reduce uncertainty, not create false certainty. Photos and scans can help a clinic estimate scope and trip length, but irreversible treatment decisions may still change after an in-person examination and new imaging.

Send useful information, not a camera roll

  • Clear front smile photo in natural light.
  • Right and left side views if requested.
  • Upper and lower teeth photos if the clinic provides instructions.
  • Existing panoramic X-ray or CBCT file if recent and clinically relevant.
  • Written home treatment plan or quote.
  • Medication, allergy and major medical-history summary.
  • What bothers you, what outcome you want, and what you are unwilling to do.

Ask the clinic to label certainty

A useful response distinguishes what the clinic can tell from the records, what is provisional, and what requires an in-person exam. “Likely 8 veneers” is different from “8 veneers are definitively indicated.”

Turn the consult into travel information

  • How many trips are likely?
  • Minimum stay per trip?
  • What imaging will be repeated on arrival?
  • What could change the quoted treatment?
  • Which days require long appointments?
  • When is the final safe departure window if things go normally?

Do not buy flights based on a photo-only promise

Use the remote consult to choose whether the trip is worth pursuing and to reserve a realistic window. Preserve flexibility until the clinic has been explicit about what could change after the in-person evaluation.

Photos can support preliminary assessment but often do not replace an in-person exam, diagnostic tests and appropriate imaging. Ask what the clinic still needs to confirm.

Should I pay a deposit after the video call?

Only after you understand the deposit, refund/change terms, planned scope and what happens if the in-person diagnosis changes.

Can I send my CBCT?

Often yes, if you have the original files and the clinic can receive them securely. Ask before exporting because file formats and upload methods vary.
